What is J12? J12 is an abbreviated version of “Jesus at 12”. There is only one reference to Jesus being a child in the gospels, outside his birth, and that is when he was 12. Luke 2:41-52
Why only one reference to Jesus as a child? That’s what we ask! Sort of cool isn’t it?! Why not “Jesus at 6” or Jesus at 18”? The answer - God considers the age of “12” to be a significant time in the life and development of a boy or girl. We will be looking at the phrase “I must be about my Father’s business” which was Jesus response to his parents when asked the question, “Where have you been?” That sentence is filled with rich implications for our 12 year olds today!

What are our plans for J12? Currently we will be holding one J12 event per month. Kids will have a chance to build friendships, hear God’s Word, have fun together and serve others within our community. Eventually we hope to see the J12 program as a separate program on Sunday mornings with a weekly meeting during the week for our 5th/6th graders. We need to develop a larger leadership team, facilities and resources to move us to that frequency but that is our goal! Nationwide, we see less 5th/6th graders attending church then in previous years. This concerns us and motivates us to address the particular needs of the 5th/6th grader in the 21st century.
How can I help as a parent? Glad you asked! God mandated parents to teach their children the scriptures and live a holy life before their children so we are here to support that process! There are several things we suggest: bring your child regularly to J12 events, connect with their small group leader regularly to see how they are doing and follow up with the material at home. Also, we need LOTs of help at our events, please volunteer to help prepare food, chaperone, set up/tear down, etc. We’ll be asking the kids to pitch in as well – after all, this is their group!
